Alex DeLarge

Alex DeLarge is the narrator and antihero of A Clockwork Orange. He leads a gang of droogs through acts of violence before being imprisoned and subjected to the state's Ludovico conditioning treatment.

Alex DeLarge and the problem of free will

Intelligent, charismatic, and deeply cruel, Alex takes pleasure in violence and classical music, especially Beethoven. His story tests whether forced obedience can be considered moral when it removes a person's capacity to choose.

Violence, conditioning, and moral choice

Alex has no special powers; his influence comes from manipulation, confidence, and leadership over his gang. The Ludovico Technique makes him physically unable to commit violence, but the later reversal of the treatment restores his agency without guaranteeing genuine reform.
