Emil

Emil is a gentle boy with magical power and a major companion in NieR. After experiments merge him with his sister Halua, he gains a skeletal appearance and later survives through multiple copied bodies.

Emil across NieR's changing eras

Kind, self-conscious, and devoted to his friends, Emil fears that his appearance will make others reject him. His motivation repeatedly becomes protecting people even when doing so destroys parts of his own identity.

Magic, replicated bodies, and loyalty to his friends

Emil uses petrification, destructive magic, and later mechanical or replicated bodies. His friendship with Nier, Kaine, and Weiss shapes the original story, while the many Emil copies in NieR:Automata distinguish the surviving consciousness from mass-produced versions.
