Evangelion Test Type-01

Evangelion Test Type-01 is the biomechanical Evangelion unit primarily piloted by Shinji Ikari in the defense of Tokyo-3 in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Unit-01 appears to be a controlled weapon, but repeated berserk incidents reveal an independent will and a deeper connection to Shinji's mother, Yui Ikari. Its actions during battles with the Angels repeatedly blur the boundary between machine, organism, and parent.

Berserk awakenings, the AT Field, and Yui Ikari

The unit uses progressive knives, firearms, and an AT Field, while later acquiring the S2 Engine. Its awakening states and bond with Shinji are central to both NERV's plans and the series' exploration of identity and human connection.
